Vitamin A in immunity mediated by T cells

A review published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in November 2012, discussed the role of retinoic acid (the main metabolite of vitamin A) in promoting the differentiation of regulatory T cells, which help to suppress inflammatory reactions, and in modulating the immunity at the level of mucosa through the activation of T cells.

In a state of vitamin A deficiency, the inflammatory response of T cells may be inadequate.

Supplementation of vitamin D3 in patients with recurrent respiratory tract infections: a randomized, double-blind

A study published in the BMJ in January 2013 showed that supplementation with vitamin D3 may reduce the risk of developing respiratory tract infections. The study was double-blind study of 2 groups, both consisting of 70 patients with antibody deficiency or suffering from frequent respiratory tract infections:

• The first group took a supplement of vitamin D3 (4000 IU);

• The second group received placebo.

The result of the study was a reduction of infections in the group that took the supplement of vitamin D3.

In addition, the results indicate that supplementation with vitamin D3 has reduced the use of antibiotics by 60% in patients with frequent infections of the respiratory tract.
